Help

This section provides some tips on navigation of Animal Genetics Training Resource.

  1. This AGTR requires Microsoft Internet Explorer, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple QuickTime Player and Macromedia Flash Player. If they are not installed on your system you will find them in the Program folder of this resource. Before installing these programs, it is highly recommended to read the README file, which can be found in the Programs folder of the CD. Open Windows Explorer, go to the CD drive and double click on the README file.

  2. The "Opening screen page" is the gateway to the training resource, and will lead directly to the home page. Click the Skip button if you want to enter the contents of the training resource without listening to the introduction.

If the AGTR-CD does not start, open Windows Explorer, go to the CD-drive and double click on the "Opening.html" file.

  3. Viewing on your screen: The Animal Genetics Training Resource is best viewed in MS Internet Explorer. For best viewing, set the text size in the view option to Medium, settings above medium size may result in text distortion. To see the web page better, optimize the screen by pressing the F11 button on your keyboard. To change back, press F11 again.

  4. Exploring the contents of the Animal Genetics Training Resource: Click on the buttons in the Modules and Tools menus to access the various contents of this resource. There is also a Help button. Click the link [Overview] in the Home page for an overview of the contents.

  5. To navigate within the Animal Genetics Training Resource, use the navigation buttons in Windows Explorer.

    1. To identify which document is being viewed in the new window, check the “Title bar” (blue) at the top of the page, or the uniform resource locator (URL address field) of the browser at the upper part of the page.

      1. When in Module 1 on the CD, the “Title bar” would read: Animal Genetics Training Resource Version II; Module 1, while the URL would read: F:\Module\module1\Module1.htm.

      2. When in Module 1 on the web, the “Title bar” would read: Animal Genetics Training Resource Version II; Module 1-Internet Explorer,
        whereas the URL would read:http://agtr.ilri.cgiar.org/Module/module1/Module1.htm.

    2. Use the Back button to the left in the navigation panel to go back to the previous window(s) viewed. To be sure of where you are in the Resource, see No 5 (i) above.

    3. If a new window has been opened and the back button in that window is no longer active, then use the Close button (X) in the upper right corner to go back to the previous window.

    4. If you are not certain whether to use “close” or “back”, then check the back button first.

    5. Within the windows and documents, there are buttons that take you back to the beginning of the window or document. In some cases back buttons within the windows take you to the content lists. Where there are no such buttons, follow the procedure described in No 5 (ii) and (iii). When exploring a Tool you can also click the button of that specific tool to get back to the first level content list of the tool.

  6. There are also numerous links in windows and within texts of the resource. Links within the resource are indicated in [burgundy] whereas those to other websites are in [blue]. Clicking on these links take you the respective linked documents, web addresses and/or sections.

  7. As one scrolls down any opened document, the tools menu doesn't scroll alongside. To know where you are, check the web address at the top of the document (see No 5.i above).

  8. Printing documents:

    1. PDF versions (Print versions) are provided within the resource to print e.g. modules, case studies, compendia, and instructions on copyright and citation. To print, open the PDF-file by clicking on the links [Print version] which are located near the top right hand corner of the top html page and then print as desired. The software “Acrobat Reader” is required to open pdf-files and needs to be installed in the computer used; this software is included in the CD (it can also be downloaded from the Internet).

NOTE: Some pdf documents take a while to open, so do not close the window even if initially a blank screen appears. The time it takes depends on the size of document to be opened and also the speed of the computer and network (band width) used.

    2. HTML print versions are available in some windows, e.g.for information on specific breeds and for glossaries and lists of web resources, books and CDs.

  9. Search the AGTR: A general search facility is available in the resource to enable searches for specified, phrases, words or titles of articles available on a topic of interest, or reference to specific authors. The rules within this facility are those that would apply to general internet search engines such as “google” or “yahoo”.

  10. In the windows for Case Studies, one can view titles of case studies grouped as they appear in each of the modules; one can also view a list of all case studies. One and the same case study is given the same number in all lists.

  11. While opening a .pdf document, because of its size (some documents are up to 7MB.), the process may be very slow. Give it a little time and it will open.

  12. Because of the enhanced feature of the new Adobe Acrobat reader, when you close a .pdf file and relocate elsewhere within the resource, and then come back to the same pdf file, the file will open at the position of the text where you were at last. To get to the top of the document, use the scroll buttons.
