ArkDB |
|
Highlights
|
The ArkDB database system aims to provide a comprehensive public repository for genome mapping data from farmed and other animal species. The aim is to provide a route into genomic and other sequence from the initial viewpoint of linkage mapping, RH mapping, physical mapping or - possibly more importantly - QTL mapping data. Main species in the database are: cat, chicken, cow, deer, horse, pig, quail, salmon, sea bass, sheep and turkey. |

CATALOGUE OF LIFE:2005 ANNUAL CHECKLIST
|
|
Highlights
|
Species 2000 and the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) are
involving taxonomists throughout the world in the Species 2000 and ITIS
Catalogue of Life (CoL) programme, collating a uniform and validated
index to the worlds known species for use as a practical tool in
inventorying and monitoring biodiversity worldwide. This is a work in
progress, now covering nearly one-third of the world’s species
including plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms.

DOMESTIC ANIMAL DIVERSITY INFORMATION SYSTEM (DAD–IS)
|
|
Highlights
|
Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD–IS) is the key
communication and information tool for implementing the Global Strategy
for the Management of Farm Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR). It is being
developed first to assist countries and country networks, and also
serves as the virtual structure for the Strategy. It will increasingly
provide extensive searchable databases, tools, guidelines, a library,
links and contacts. |

DOMESTIC ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES INFORMATION SYSTEMS (DAGRIS)
|
|
Highlights
|
DAGRIS is an information system designed to facilitate the compilation,
organization and dissemination of information on the origin,
distribution, diversity, present use and status of indigenous farm
animal genetic resources from past and present research results in an
efficient way. The underlying concept is that such information provides
the necessary basis for developing breed improvement as well as
conservation programs. The working objectives of DAGRIS are: 1) Compile
and organize information on farm animal genetic resources from all
available sources; 2) Maintain the integrity and validity of the
information, and 3) Disseminate the information in a readily accessible
way to all key stakeholders.

The data bank monitors information on breeds and country populations –
of the farm animal species buffalo, cattle, sheep, goat, pig and horse,
ass, rabbits – in 46 countries of Europe to keep watch on development,
change and risk of extinction, to encourage use and conservation of
animal genetic diversity. You have three modes of access: 1.
Country-by-species tables 2. groups of similar breeds 3. search for
breeds

LIVESTOCK AND ENVIRONMENT TOOLBOX (LEAD)
|
|
Highlights
|
The aim of the toolbox is to provide practical aid on livestock and
environment issues in the decision making of policy-makers and planners
in developing countries. Three main categories of livestock production
systems are covered: Grazing, Mixed crop/livestock and Industrial. Each
category is further divided into sub-systems. The toolbox contains
information (text, photos, tables, maps) that enable the user to
explore interactions between livestock and the environment, and to
identify interactions that enhance the positive and/or mitigate the
negative impacts (also available on CD-ROM). |

MOUSE GENOME INFORMATICS (MGI)
|
|
Highlights
|
The Mouse Genome Informatics Database provides integrated access to
data on the genetics, genomics and biology of the laboratory mouse. The
projects contributing to this resource are: Mouse Genome Database (MGD)
Project includes data on gene characterization and nomenclature,
mapping, gene homologies among mammals, sequence links, phenotypes,
allelic variants and mutants, and strain data. Gene Expression Database
(GXD) Project integrates different types of gene expression information
from the laboratory mouse, and provides an electronic index of
published experiments on endogenous gene expression during mouse
development. Mouse Genome Sequence (MGS) Project, the goal of the MGS
project is to integrate emerging mouse genomic sequence data with the
genetic and biological data available in MGD and GXD. MGS supports the
MouseBLAST server as a sequence-level entry point into the MGI Database.

VARK - a guide to learning styles
|
|
Highlights
|
VARK is a questionnaire that provides users, e.g. students, with a profile of their learning preferences (Visual, Aural, Read/write, Kinesthetic or Multimodal). The insights gained can be useful for students to develop additional, effective strategies for learning, and for teachers in their choice of teaching methodologies. The questionnaire is available in several languages.
VARK is available free in the Internet for use in student or faculty development, but first seek permission (see the VARK website), and always give attribution to the source.
