Animal Breeding - an introductory tutorial

Highlights

Computer assisted learning (CAL) tutorial in quantitative genetics by Roden, J, Andersson-Eklund, L, Strandberg, E & Garnsworthy, P (Version 2.1, 2001). The aim is to support student learning, not to replace other methods of teaching. The tutorial includes the following chapters:

  • Inbreeding (of individuals and of populations)

  • Inheritance of quantitative traits (additive genetic effects, breeding value, heritability)

  • Selection (factors influencing genetic improvement

  • Multiple traits (correlated selection response, multi-trait selection)

  • Each chapter allows students to explore a number of concepts, and ends with a series of self-assessment questions. Interactive exercises using the software GENUP (Kinghorn, B) are also included.

Animal Production Database (formerly BEASTCD)

Highlights

The Animal Production Database (formerly known as BEASTCD) is the most comprehensive source of information about animal breeding, animal nutrition, dairy science, and dairy technology. The database also covers economically valuable animals and laboratory species relevant to agriculture as well as such specialized areas as the breeding aspects of fur bearing and game animals. Compiled by subject specialists at CABI Publishing, the Animal Production Database contains more than 700,000 abstracts and citations, with 25,000 records added annually. Containing over 30 years of research from over 75 countries it provides an ideal source for animal scientists, researchers in the agricultural life sciences and veterinary specialists requiring an international perspective on the wealth of information available on animal production.

The Animal Production Database is available on CD-ROM (updated quarterly) and on the Internet. It utilizes the popular SilverPlatter Information Retrieval System (SPIRS), providing the tools needed to obtain accurate and comprehensive search results.
